Royal Public MHSS: Assessment and Evaluation Policy (Playgroup to Class VIII)
Royal Public MHSS employs a comprehensive and continuous assessment
system
across all classes, from Playgroup to Class VIII, designed to thoroughly evaluate
student progress. The academic year is divided into two terms for all classes.
Classes Playgroup to Preparatory
Assessment in pre-primary classes is continuous and ongoing throughout
the year. Student performance is evaluated twice per term using worksheets,
assignment sheets, and participation in academic and co-curricular activities aimed
at specific learning outcomes. Regular completion of class work and homework, with
neatness and accuracy, is essential.
Classes I and II
For Classes I and II, the academic year also consists of two terms,
each with two assessment reports. There are no formal examinations. Instead,
assessment is based on daily performance and regular classroom observations. This
includes a variety of activities such as:
- Worksheets, Assignments
- Recitations, Group discussions
- Dictation, Quizzes
- Project work, Extempore, Field projects
Report cards for Playgroup to Class II will use color
indicators
to reflect student performance:
- EXCELLENT
- VERY GOOD
- GOOD
- NEEDS ENCOURAGEMENT
Classes III to VIII
For Classes III to VIII, the assessment scheme incorporates both continuous
evaluation and formal examinations, with both terms
carrying equal weightage.

Syllabus
The syllabus for Classes III to V will cover the portion taught in the respective
term. It will be made available on the school website in advance.
For Classes VI to VIII:
Term II will include a percentage of significant topics from Term I, along with the
full Term II syllabus:
- Class VI: 10% of Term I + Full Term II syllabus
- Class VII: 20% of Term I + Full Term II syllabus
- Class VIII: 30% of Term I + Full Term II syllabus
This will also be available on the school website.
Promotion Policy (Classes III to XII)
Students must secure a minimum of 40% marks in each subject and in aggregate to be
promoted to the next class. Additionally, students are assessed on a three-point
scale in the following co-curricular activities:
- Physical Activities
- Visual & Performing Arts (Drawing / Painting / Dance / Music)
- Work Education
Attendance Requirement: A minimum of 75%
attendance is mandatory to appear for
the Annual Examination.
Exam Pattern – Classes IX to XII (State Board)
At Royal Public Matric Hr. Sec. School, Bethaniyapuram, we follow the Tamil Nadu
State Board curriculum and exam guidelines prescribed by the Directorate of
Government Examinations (DGE), Tamil Nadu.
Class IX (9th Standard)
Assessment Method: Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE) at
school level.
Components:
- Monthly tests and mid‑term exams
- Terminal exams and project work
- Co‑scholastic evaluation (attendance, participation, assignments)
Purpose: To prepare students for the public exam in Class X by
improving conceptual learning and study skills.
Class X (SSLC Public Examination)
- Exam Type: State Board (conducted by DGE)
- Duration: 3 hours per paper (plus 15 mins reading time)
Marks Distribution:
- Language, English, Maths, Social Science: 100 marks (theory)
- Science: 75 marks (theory) + 25 marks (practical)
Passing Criteria: Minimum 35% per subject
(Science: at least 20/75 in theory and 15/25 in practical)
Grading System: A1 to E based on performance
Class XI (Higher Secondary – +1)
Assessment: Monthly tests, mid-terms, revision exams, and
district-level common exams.
Goal: Build steady preparation for the Class XII Board Exam through
continuous evaluation.
Class XII (HSC Public Examination – +2)
- Exam Type: State Board Public Exam (by DGE)
- Duration: 3 hours per paper
- Marks Distribution:
- Theory – 70 marks
- Practical – 20 marks
- Internal Assessment – 10 marks
Total: 100 marks per subject
Duration: 3 hours per paper.
Pattern: Mix of objective, short answer and long
answer questions.

Promotion Policy
- Students must secure 40% marks in each subject and in
aggregate for promotion to the next class.
- For subjects with practical examinations, students must secure a minimum of
40% marks in both theory and
practical components separately.
- A student failing in one of the five subjects in the Annual Examination will
be placed in a compartment in that subject.
- Appearing in all exams is mandatory.
General Guidelines & Important Notes
- Changes in Exam Schedule: If any exam dates are shifted due to
unforeseen circumstances, students must adhere to the revised schedule. No
applications or excuses will be entertained for non-compliance.
- Re-tests: Re-tests for PAs/PTs/UTs/Term Exams are permitted
only in cases of new admission, on-duty school assignments, or documented medical
leave, and require permission from the Principal.
- Absence during Exams: In genuine cases of absence during
examinations, the Principal will make a decision based on the merit of each case,
considering academic performance, attendance, and classroom behavior. The
Principal's decision regarding promotion in such cases is final.
- Medical Leave: If medical leave is taken, the medical
certificate must be submitted to the school within 3 working days of joining
back, along with an application from parents.
- Board Eligibility (X & XII): Students are eligible to appear
for Board examinations only if they maintain at least 75% attendance for the
month preceding the month in which the Board examination commences.
